Functional shifts of bird communities determined by hyper-dominant species

Responses to global environmental changes have been documented from individual organisms to entire ecosystems, but the understanding of how these responses scale up remains limited. Using 50 years of bird abundance data in North America, we found widespread shifts toward bird communities with larger body masses and relative appendages but smaller clutch sizes and shorter generation lengths. A small number of hyper-dominant species drove these changes, as their abundances greatly increased or decreased, associated with idiosyncratic environmental factors such as different land use types; consequently, community-level changes are not well predicted from widely observed within-species patterns. Our results demonstrate that community-level functional responses to global change are likely to be driven by hyper-dominant species responding to multiple environmental drivers.
